about

Coffin/Perlson/Krauss is the brainchild of three virtuosic musical masters: renowned saxophonist Jeff Coffin, accomplished drummer Jordan Perlson, and bass legend Viktor Krauss. This nine-track debut of all original music is a thrilling sonic odyssey that showcases undeniable musicianship and boundless artistic expression.

Coffin, Perlson, and Krauss first started playing together in 2020. Like many great musical combos, their union came together by chance, when they met on a gig. The connection among the trio was evident instantly. "There is a special musical chemistry that permeates with Jordan and Jeff that generates a sum greater than its parts," Krauss reflects.

"It's not so often that 'the magic' suddenly happens, and the bells go off, and the stars align, but it happened that the first day we all three got together to work on the music." He describes the atmosphere as warm, and closely locked in. "we love listening to each other play and we're excited to hear what surprises lurk around each corner when we improvise."

During the pandemic, the three Nashville-based musicians formed a social pod and made playing together a regularity as long as they were safe to do so. Gifted with time, the trio decided to record at Kraus' home studio to officially document this special collaboration, eventually settling on seven compositions and two solo works. The resulting work is riveting and dynamic, brought to life by three musical masters at the top of their game.

JEFF COFFIN:
Jeff Coffin is a globally recognized saxophonist, composer, and educator, and is a member of the legendary U.S. rock group, Dave Matthews Band. You may also know him from his 14 years, and 3 Grammy Awards with the genre-defying Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Coffin was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2023 for Best Contemporary Instrumental Recording for his own Between Dreaming And Joy. Jeff fronts numerous groups when not touring with DMB and has released 20+ solo recordings on Ear Up Records. Coffin is known for his musical passion, his deep commitment to music education, and his continued dedication to improvisational music. Jeff is also a Yamaha Performing Artist & Clinician, a Boston Sax Shop Ambassador, teaches improvisation at the prestigious Vanderbilt University, authored numerous music books, authored a children’s book, produces, engineers, mixes, draws, and runs his own critically acclaimed record label, Ear Up Records.

JORDAN PERLSON:
Drummer Jordan Perlson is one of the most dynamic and catalytic musicians you will hear. Transplanted from NYC to Nashville, Tennessee in 2016, Jordan remains an integral part of a wide international music scene. From cutting edge music innovators like Becca Stevens, Snarky Puppy, Banda Magda, to progressive musicians Adrian Belew, Echolyn, Kaki King, fusion megastar Hiromi, jazz legends Seamus Blake, Gary Burton, David Liebman, folk heroes Alison Brown, Missy Raines, reggae giants Matisyahu, or Trevor Hall, Jordan has become a well known and sought after force in these many musical circles.

VIKTOR KRAUSS:
Eclectic composer/bassist Viktor Krauss has been a presence in Nashville Tennessee since 1992 with over 500 album credits as either a bassist, composer/songwriter, or producer. On tour, Viktor has been heard and seen with Lyle Lovett's Large Band since 1994. Starting with 1996's "Nashville", Krauss began a long tenure with Jazz great Bill Frisell. Other albums with Frisell include "Gone, Just Like a Train", "Good Dog, Happy Man", "East/West" and "Disfarmer." Other artists over Krauss’ career have included James Taylor, Tom Jones, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Carly Simon and Jerry Douglas. In 2006, Viktor was awarded a fellowship for the prestigious Film Composers' Lab at the Sundance Institute and his film composing credits include music for directors Ken Burns and the late Robert Altman. In 2022, Viktor joined Robert Plant and Alison Krauss as a multi-instrumentalist (electric guitar, piano) on the “Raise the Roof” tour.
